ULNA

Ultra Low Noise Amplifier @ 300 K

Electrical Specifications @ 300 K

                          Description

  • The ULNA’s operating at room temperature have been developed with a measured noise temperature that achieves a factor of four  times lower noise performance than commercially available amplifiers in the 1.1 to 1.5 GHz frequency range.

  • The total receiver system noise is reduced from 60 K to less than 30 K. In the past, this noise performance was only available at cryogenic temperatures.

  • Using the ULNA’s, the need for cryogenic systems are eliminated and thus, the cost to operate the amplifier is drastically reduced.

  • Consult factory for other frequency ranges.

                          Applications

  • Radio Astronomy

    • At frequencies below 2 GHz, ambient temperature or thermoelectrically cooled LNA’s can have noise comparable or less than the antennas noise (spillover, blockage, feed loss, and sky)

  • Arrays

    • The cost per receiver is greatly reduced when cryogenics are not required. This enables large arrays for feeds and small dishes. A 2000 x 5 m array becomes viable.

  • Transistor Physics

    • The two (2) to three (3) decrease in noise for a 1.34 decrease in physical temperature presents a measurement which may lead to better understanding of the drain noise in HEMTs.
